Question about crocheting? Still a little new to it?

Ok so I chained 55, single crocheted in second chain from hook and the remaining so that would be 54 single crochet total. Then the pattern says chain 1 and turn and repeat that round again. After you turn should the hook you are holding be on the right side now and you go from right to left? And do you normally single crochet in the spot that you just chained 1 in? do you normally insert the hook from your side or insert it through from the other side when single crocheting after the first turn? Thanks
