Were there any WWF Tournaments before Wrestlemania ?

Hi - I've just recently got back into watching WWE after about 10 years, but after watching this year's Royal Rumble I'm well and truly hooked. I've just started buying up the DVDs of the fantastic Wrestlemania which got me to wondering - were there any special WWF events before the advent of Wrestlemania - obviously these days there are several a year but I guess it must have been big on TV before they started Wrestlemania and would love to know if there was a tournament or big tours before the 'grandaddy of them all' started ? If there were are they available on DVD ? Thanks for your help, Andy
