How do you make your own filter cartridges for aquariums?

I'd like to know how to make my own filter cartridges for my aquarium using old used up filter cartridges. I know you can buy quilt batting or those filter floss pads at aquarium stores and you can fill it up with all sorts of media, but I'm not sure how to sew or attach the floss onto the plastic frame to keep all the media inside the cartridge.
