How long does it take to get a black belt in karate?

i am thinking of taking it up and was wondering how long it takes on average and how many belts are there? I'm not some nieve person who doesnt know anything about martial art, i already have a black belt in judo and take part in kickboxing competitions, i just dont know anything about karate.
